Like many of the best ideas in life, the concept for JobShare Partner was conceived over a glass of wine.  One evening after work, Tom and I were discussing the low numbers of women in senior roles in our respective workplaces. From what we could see, this imbalance wasn’t caused by differences in capability, education, ambition or any other attribute – it was most often caused by the fact that many women take time out of their careers for family reasons and so fall behind their male counterparts.

The conversation led to how this imbalance could be addressed, which led to flexible working arrangements, which in turn led to job sharing. We had both witnessed firsthand how successful job sharing could be for both the employees and employer – indeed in a previous role my bosses were two job sharing professionals. People said that these two women were ‘lucky’ because they had found such compatible job-sharing partners in each other. But in this case luck had nothing to do with it – they had actively sought each other out, built a business case and applied for the management position as a job share partnership. That’s called being proactive, not lucky.

Since that initial conversation back in 2013, we’ve come to understand that the benefits of job sharing go well beyond “corporate”and can apply to men as well as women. We now know that job sharing can be applied in many walks of life – a mature-age student who studies a couple of days a week but still needs to eat, an office worker who is “transitioning to retirement” but is not quite ready to be a Grey Nomad, someone whose work capacity is limited by health challenges or maybe just someone who has a lot of other things to do in their life!

It takes two essential elements for a job sharing arrangement to be successful. Firstly, an employer who’s open to flexible working arrangements and a compatible job share partnership. The fact is that to attract and retain the best people, more and more of today’s better employers are increasingly prepared to offer flexible work hours, job-sharing and part time roles. The second element, a compatible job sharing partner, is where JobShare Partner comes in.

Today, we have moved way past humble musings to action, and JobShare Partner has rapidly become Australia’s premiere place for connecting people with compatible job share partners.
